Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE)

At Vedanta Superspeciality Center, we offer advanced Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE), a highly specialized endoscopic procedure that allows deep examination and treatment of the small intestine—an area that is difficult to access with conventional endoscopy.

DBE uses a unique technique involving two balloons attached to the endoscope and an overtube, enabling the device to move through the winding structure of the small intestine with minimal discomfort. This technique provides clear visualization and access for diagnosis and therapeutic interventions in the small bowel.

What Conditions Can DBE Help Diagnose and Treat?

  • Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Suspected small bowel tumors or polyps
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involving the small intestine
  • Small bowel strictures or blockages
  • Unexplained abdominal pain or iron-deficiency anemia
  • Evaluation of abnormal imaging or capsule endoscopy findings

How is Double Balloon Enteroscopy Performed?

DBE is performed under sedation or anesthesia. A specialized endoscope with two small inflatable balloons is inserted either through the mouth or rectum, depending on the area to be examined. The balloons are alternately inflated and deflated to gently advance the scope through the small intestine, allowing for diagnostic observation, biopsies, polyp removal, or treatment of bleeding sites.
