High Resolution Manometry (HRM)

At Vedanta Superspeciality Center, we offer state-of-the-art High Resolution Manometry (HRM), a specialized diagnostic test used to assess the function of the esophagus and its muscles. HRM is particularly valuable for evaluating swallowing disorders, unexplained chest pain, and conditions like achalasia.

HRM provides a detailed pressure map of the esophagus by measuring muscular contractions during swallowing. This high-precision tool helps our gastroenterologists accurately identify abnormalities in esophageal motility that cannot be detected through standard tests.

What Conditions Can HRM Help Diagnose?

  • Achalasia and other esophageal motility disorders
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Non-cardiac chest pain
  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Pre-operative assessment before anti-reflux surgery
  • Esophageal spasm or ineffective peristalsis

How is High Resolution Manometry Performed?

HRM is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. A thin, flexible catheter with pressure sensors is gently inserted through the nose into the esophagus. The patient is then asked to swallow small sips of water while the sensors record muscle activity along the esophagus in real time. The test typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is well tolerated.
